Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, faith-based organization providing local human service programs, as well as opportunities for individual and community involvement.

Established locally in 1911, Volunteers of America Greater Sacramento & Northern Nevada's ongoing mission to reach and uplift all people has expanded to include families with children, seniors, the homeless, the mentally ill, and people with substance abuse issues.

Our professional staff currently operates 42 locally managed and delivered programs. Services provided include food and shelter, counseling, independent living and parenting skills, substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation, job training and housing.

Turkeys needed for Turkey Drive

Volunteers of America's annual Turkey Drive is in immediate need of donations! Set to end Sunday, Nov. 23, we are far behind the number of turkeys needed for our holiday meals. We invite the community to donate a frozen turkey to our Central Kitchen facility at 700 North Fifth St., Sacramento (7 a.m.- 6 p.m. daily), or make an immediate financial contribution online.

Winter Shelter to open Monday, Nov. 24

The Winter Shelter at
Cal Expo will
open on Nov. 24.

WInter Shelter
The Winter Shelter, located at Cal Expo, operated by Volunteers of America and funded by the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance (DHA), will open Monday, Nov. 24, 2008.

Able to house as many as 154 men, women and children each night throughout Sacramento’s cold and wet winter months, it will remain open through late March 2009. 

The shelter provides clients shelter and two daily meals in a comfortable dorm-style environment. Residents may stay at the shelter for 14 consecutive days with extensions granted on a case-by-case basis. A valid TB clearance is required from each resident within three days of admittance for them to be able to remain at the shelter.

Volunteers of America provides round-trip shuttle bus service originating at the Winter Shelter’s downtown Sacramento sign-up area located at Loaves and Fishes.

From November 2007 through March 2008, 1,576 men, women and children received safe haven through the Winter Shelter program.
