Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, faith-based organization providing local human service programs, as well as opportunities for individual and community involvement.
Established in Sacramento in 1911, Volunteers of America's ongoing mission to reach and uplift all people has expanded to include families with children, seniors, the homeless, former foster youth, and people with substance abuse issues. Our goal? To end homelessness, support the most vulnerable populations and transform our community into a safer, healthier place.
Our professional staff currently operates more than 40 locally managed and delivered programs. Services provided include food and shelter, counseling, independent living and parenting skills, substance-abuse treatment and rehabilitation, and job development.
Veterans Services
Supportive Services for Veterans Families offers homeless prevention and rapid re-housing programs for veterans and their families.
Homeless Services
Volunteers of America, in an effort to reach out and uplift all people, operates a quartet of emergency shelter programs for homeless people: the Family Shelter, the Men's Shelter, Open Arms and the seasonal Winter Sanctuary.
Transitional Housing
Transitional housing options offered by Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada include: Mather Community Campus (transitional housing and job-development program); Independent Living Readiness Program; Transitional Housing Program for Parenting Women; Transitional Housing Program for Families; and the Transitional Housing Program for Former Foster Youth.
Permanent Supportive Housing
Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada operates two permanent-supportive housing programs: Nova House and Omega Project. A third, the North Highlands Living Center for disabled single adults, is scheduled to open in November 2011.
Youth Services
Former foster youth are encouraged and mentored through Volunteers of America's Transitional Housing Program for Former Foster Youth.
Senior Services
In addition to its unique Sacramento Senior Safe House program, a haven for abused and neglected seniors, Volunteers of America operates affordable housing apartment complexes for seniors in the Sacramento area (Auburn, Rocklin and Roseville).
Treatment & Recovery Services
Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada operates four treatment-and-recovery service programs: the Comprehensive Alcohol Treatment Center; the Residential Treatment Center; the Residential Treatment Program for Parenting Women; and the Substance Abuse Outreach Counseling program.
