Sacramento Senior Safe House genesis
The Sacramento Senior Safe House: Building a dream
The Sacramento Senior Safe House, the inspiration of long-time senior advocate Maxine Milner Krugman, has been 10 years in the making.
It's been an amazing journey to this point in the evolution of the safe house. Thanks to a $125,000 grant from the Lennar Charitable Housing Foundation and unseasonably good weather, the long-delayed construction of Volunteers of America’s Sacramento Senior Safe House received a New Year’s kick start in January 2009.
“Everyone’s doing an outstanding job,” Lennar Area Manager Joe Miglietto told us a month into the project – and they continued to do so. Miglietto supervised the more than 30 contractors involved in the HomeAid Sacramento project, for which Lennar served as its "Builder Captain." One of Lennar's primary objectives was to create an energy-efficient, ecological friendly home.
“The Sacramento Senior Safe House was ‘built green to save green,’” said Lennar Vice President Laura Stickelman. “This facility was designed with the advantages of solar power coupled with efficient construction practices. Radiant barrier materials, waterproofing, energy-efficient lighting, and an energy-saving HVAC system – combined with SunPower’s 7.4 kW solar system – are some of the features that enable this home to meet SMUD’s SolarSmart Home requirements.”
“Bottom line, this home is 30 percent more efficient than standard new homes built within California,” Stickelman continued, “and the state-of-the-art energy systems installed within this facility will be able to produce enough power to offset most of the home’s electricity requirements. All of this translates to reduced operating costs and an improved living environment for the senior residents.”
Indeed, for the month following the home's solar panel installation, its SMUD statement showed a $12.56 credit.
Earlier in 2009, Lennar and Sleep Train Mattress Center were able to move in their donations of home furnishings and mattresses, and the Rancho Cordova-based landscaping firm Ad Land Venture completed their landscaping efforts.
