When Maud and Ballington Booth tried out names for their new organization 110 years ago, one word made the short list and remained prominent: "volunteer."
In those days, a volunteer was anyone who was committed to a mission or cause. Since its earliest days – when Volunteers of America brought food, medicine and comfort to people not served by other charities – volunteering has been instrumental in every aspect of Volunteers of America’s ministry of service.
From supporting children in need by helping with our annual Operation Backpack campaign in July, to assisting the men and women at our Sacramento Senior Safe House for abused and neglected seniors, our volunteers have an enormous impact on the lives of our clients.
How to become a volunteer
We will work with each individual interested in volunteering (18 or older), and assess how much time and resources he or she can donate. We understand that everyone has personal and professional commitments, and we value any time that volunteers can devote to our organization.
