When Maud and Ballington Booth tried out names for their new organization 110 years ago, one word made the short list and remained prominent: "volunteer."
In those days, a volunteer was anyone who was committed to a mission or cause. Since its earliest days – when Volunteers of America brought food, medicine and comfort to people not served by other charities – volunteering has been instrumental in every aspect of Volunteers of America’s ministry of service.
From programs of Christmas music presented by Girl Scouts for residents of our senior-housing complexes, to home-cooked meals delivered to the homeless at the A Street Shelter for men, our volunteers have an enormous impact on the lives of our clients.
